Once again proving that China’s leaders are 10x more accountable to the people then the parasites in the west.
Supporters of Xi’s anti-corruption drive say the campaign promotes clean governance, but critics argue it provides the president with the power to purge political rivals.
I’m not a critic but I think Xi is purging political rivals. I think Xi’s political rivals are bourgeois counter-revolutionaries and greedy fucks.
We need the death penalty for white collar corruption in the West. Hold these ghouls to account. Based China.
It’s a two-year reprieve sentence as usual, meaning that as long as they don’t find more charges, he will be sentenced to life in prison and not receive the death penalty. This helps make him confess to other crimes and denounce accomplices.
I understand China is a big country but with the number of convictions I see in People’s Daily from high-level officials I have to wonder if they shouldn’t change the law, seems it’s not deterring people. Maybe they have plans for that and just want to get the bulk of it out of the way first. Tang Renjian accepted bribes between 2007 and 2024, which is just insane to think that it went on until last year.
Personally, I don’t think death penalty is necessary. It seems to me that it’s largely used in China as a threat to force cooperation from the perpetrator.
Nah, if shit really gets bad they can just do public execution of corrupt officials, French-style.
If just execution by firing squad doesn’t seem like enough deterrent, we will see if eternal public humiliation on top of that is enough. Just the threat may be enough.
On the one hand, accepting bribes worth multiple millions is bad and it potentially destroys lots of other peoples lives.
On the other hand, nothing is as permanent as death and I feel like it is a bit on the harsh side. Life in prison with a possibility to re educate seems better.
How does the reprieve work? Is it like parole and are they able to overturn the death sentence with good behavior? Or is it just a waiting period?
Also, 33 million dollar is a lot. It can build schools, provide healthcare, etc.
From what I recall, as long as he doesn’t interfere with the investigation and doesn’t commit additional crimes, the sentence is automatically reduced to life imprisonment, the ideas is that it gives the convicted person incentive to cooperate.
It’s actually even worse than that. Yuan purchasing power in China is almost 1 to 1 USD for most regular purchases, i.e. groceries in China cost 50 yuan while they cost 50 USD in USA. It only converts 1 to 7 USD for very large purchases like electric cars, mostly determined by whether said large purchase required materials from outside of China, which would be priced at USD prices.
Thus, the impact of that stolen money is more like 100 million USD in the US.
