I’ve been on lemmy since the beginning. My recommendation is to check the more wholesome communities, pets, and fandom. They’re very active and people there are great. I see more negativity in the news communities (world, tech…), so depending on your preferences maybe get your news and comment from somewhere else.

Zotero is a great piece of software. I’m so glad the devs continue putting effort into it

I am in Europe, and yesterday we were at 38C, but humidity was around 50%. Sucks, but at least you do not melt if you’re in the shade. Much worse to be at 30C and 80%. The last time I was at 40C with 90% was at a sauna and thus I only lasted like 10 minutes.

CDs and Bandcamp are also my way to go.

In my case, the main driver was disappearing songs. I hate it when I have a great playlist or collection of albums and some of them mysteriously disappear without notice. Or worse, they get replaced with a different version.

sigh so back to CDs we go… luckily second hand discs are dirt cheap, and even new albums are quite cheap (inflation-wise) compared to their prices in the 90s

The issue with cars is people abusing them instead of relying on public transport, where it would be cheaper and more convenient, but some people pay more for the extra comfort, which is seen as wasteful.

This snowballs into urban planning centered on cars, which creates a pretty bad incentives loop.

On the other hand, planes are a necessity for some business travel, and a nice way of visiting the world once per year. Yes, some people abuse flight, but it’s a non issue overall.

I actually do agree with you quite a lot. XMPP has two important issues: everything is an extension, including encryption (n 1998 we were still using telnet…) and relying heavily on XML, which was a good idea en 1998 but now we have better formats.

Thanks for the fair arguments. It may seem I’m defending XMPP, actually, I’m not… I ran a server and it was not great. I was trying to compare an --as you say-- 27-year-old protocol with a modern one, and Matrix doesn’t seem to be significantly better. It’s a shame, because I’d love to use it, but it just does not work well.

XMPP is a protocol too, can run on a Pentium-II (I hosted a server with 100s of users on a P2) and it doesn’t suffer from federation issues or message loss.

When there is not good client or server available, maybe it’s because the protocol was poorly designed.

I felt an irrational fear when I checked the box to become an organ donor a few years ago.

I rationally knew it was the right thing to do, but it felt bad nonetheless. Nowadays I just no longer think about it.

So my guess is that many people are scared of it, but no one wants to admit that.

Good advice on this thread, but the only one that will work for you is: find a good therapist.

A good therapist is one that not only understands your issue, but also understands you, and is able to guide you in a way that works for you. Not all people will be healed by using the same methods, and the main task of a good therapist is to find the one that clicks for you.

I would tell what worked for me, but it may not be useful. But the previous step worked: I found a good therapist which told me what I had to do.

(In case you’re already talking to an LLM: please don’t. I compared my therapist’s advice with those of an LLM -with a good prompt and all cautions observed- but the LLM didn’t “get” me and its advice was useless and sometimes outright wrong)

Edit: after reading some more replies, some people recommend taking drugs (legal or illegal). DON’T. The wrong drug will fuck you up. This includes antidepressants. Wait until a good therapist prescribes them for you. If the therapist and the GP disagree, follow the therapist’s advice. In my case this was critical as it helped me find the right medication and later quit it successfully - which is as important if not more than taking it.
