The best deals I’ve found have been at bike shops with used parts, if you’re in the Denver area Lucky Bikes is wonderful

World News@lemmy.world•Anti-fascist groups named as US terror threats ‘barely exist’, experts sayEnglish
33·4 months agoAlzheimer’s doesn’t make you a genocidal fascist, don’t let them off the hook that easy. Also turning Alzheimer’s into an insult is kinda hurtful for people who actually have it and their loved ones.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•The Left Needs Utopian Thinking | there's value in "rich accounts of a transformed society that both help us decide what steps we should take now and keep us motivated for the long haul" | JacobinEnglish
7·6 months agoMy favorite example I’ve read recently was a collection of short stories called A People’s Future of the United States. Not all utopian, some were pretty bleak, but they all had something hopeful even if it was just a small act of joy or resistance. Shoutout to Borderlands in SF for the recommendation!

11·8 months agoThankfully it’s still illegal for a hospital to deny anyone life-saving emergency care tho, so it’s good for people to know they have this option to not give their name.
It’s embarrassing that we aren’t delivering care even just at the level of care of emergency Medicaid as a universal anymore though.

World News@lemmy.world•The ‘Man-Eater’ Screwworm Is Coming | After a decades-long campaign to beat the parasites down to Panama, they’re speeding back up north. - The AtlanticEnglish
93·9 months agoHow screwworms managed to jump the barrier in 2022 is not fully clear. But in the years immediately before, the coronavirus pandemic reportedly created supply-chain snarls at the fly factory in Panama and disrupted regular cattle inspections that might have set off the alarm bells earlier.
Still, the screwworm advanced relatively slowly through Panama and Costa Rica for the first couple of years.
800,000 cattle a year are raised illegally in nature reserves [in Central America] and then smuggled by boat and truck up to Mexico. This allowed the screwworm to spread much faster than it can fly [beginning in 2024]. The line of new screwworm cases followed known smuggling routes

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Trying to be solarpunk in a capitalist worldEnglish
1·10 months ago100% agree! On the politics piece, the scope of things wrong in the world and change needed can be overwhelming, but I find the ‘think global, act local’ philosophy helpful. Find local orgs that are dismantling capitalism or defending the environment or standing up to ICE or whatever you care about and join in. You don’t have to commit right away either, you can just go to an event and see if you like their vibes and you’ll probably hear about other related groups from there and you can check out an event from one of those groups and so on until you find the people you want to work with

News@lemmy.world•WATCH: Furious Residents Surround ICE Agents Trying to Arrest Mom Clinging to BabyEnglish
5·10 months agoIt’s a classic cop routine:
- Step 1: do some violence
- Step 2: realize it looks kinda bad, look around and arrest somebody else for what they just did
- Step 3: profit (time and a half for their trouble)
This passed a couple days ago and will be signed by the Governor today! Takes effect July 2027.

29·11 months agoWe’ve got a hotline in Colorado! (844) 864-8341 They verify reports and share info with the community, and dispatch volunteer legal observers and immigration attorneys. Not sure if orgs in any other states have stood up something similar.

2·1 year agoMost Jews are not israeli and israel is not representative of Judaism, but israel does claim Judaism as a core part of its “national” identity, so there’s nothing antisemitic about pointing out the irony of Nazis supporting israel. The irony may be pretty superficial tho, some of the other replies here point out several reasons why Nazism and Zionism/israel are actually aligned.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Light Pollution vs Streetlights & Perceived SafetyEnglish
2·2 years agoWhat about some tree- or bush-like structures that have lots of small lights, one under each leaf? Having many lights that could all be positioned and angled differently would let you direct the light to only where it’s needed and create a smooth shaddow-free glow. And be pretty too! Like the Cave of Two Lovers @Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone posted. Individual lights could have different color and brightness too.
Depending on the kind of bio-engineering or fantastical biology in your world these could be completely organic, completely manufactured, or some combination like lights attached to trees/vines grown for the purpose.

‘Deltas’ could fit better with the other three, if you’re open to trying something lotic
