Well jeez. I wasn’t saying I’m against it. I’d love to see it happen.
I don’t know of any success stories of it working at scale. I mean, countries using it at scale. Not cities or provinces. I was a part of the short lived pilot program in Ontario before it was axed. Axing it completely fucked me over. It worked. It worked great. I was about to invest in starting a business.
But you know exactly what the opposition will say, right? “How can we afford it?”. Even Trudeau said he saw no path to it. So really, I was just echoing what was already said, sure - but if it keeps getting cancelled then the public will have a sour taste.
Can we afford it right now is the question. I’m not against it by any means, though.

There ain’t no trust in this game. If it isn’t open source then it’s pretty much dead in the water. You can’t compete with OSS with closed code in this space, really. There’s a few alternatives (and ones that are more mature and proven) that will always be first choices.
opi@lemmy.cato World News@lemmy.world•Trump: ‘I’m really not trolling’ with talk of Canada as 51st stateEnglish15·2 months agoWhat cards does this nipple have? None.
Canada has freedom. America doesn’t anymore. Canadians are never going to agree to rolling back their rights and freedoms for a has been country headed by a fucking dictator wannabe. Canadians will die before anything like that comes to pass. Canada may be no match militarily, but now that Canadians are aware of the dangers … that won’t be the case forever. Unless of course they decide to invade Canada right now… Not likely.
opi@lemmy.cato politics @lemmy.world•China says there are no negotiations with the US over tariffs6·2 months agoIt will be very tough. Hell, it already is. Maybe the american people will at some point finally do something about it? I personally don’t want anyone to go through any of this crap, but here we are. All self inflicted, too.
opi@lemmy.cato politics @lemmy.world•China says there are no negotiations with the US over tariffs49·2 months agoI wonder what would happen if the world just kind of ignored him? Imagine that… Just do what China’s doing. No interaction. No deals, no negotiations. Just silent chuckling and finger pointing with whiskey’s in hand.

I don’t follow the nutcase, but I have bumped into a lot of people that enjoy his message. 8+ million subscribers still a metric fuck tonne of people watching him. I mean, come on… that’s a lot of people.
opi@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•Jordan Peterson begging his cult to vote for Pierre Poilievre301·3 months agoAt the same time, though, I think it’s important to not ignore him and his message. He’s got a fucking HUGE following of young men hell bent on believing everything he says. It will make a big difference come election day. If people start thinking (which they seem to be) that Carney is a for sure thing - the liberals will lose. Complacency is real in the country. Even in the face of the threats we see now, I remain fearful that people will stay home. So, Vote. Everyone VOTE

No, no jerk alert there. I agree and have been scared of what might/is come/coming. If it ever does happen, there will be no winners in it, really. Just a lot of bloodshed for no reason but a few people deciding it should be.
I guess I hold out some hope that the people and military to our south will in some way stop it. Though, hope is fading.
opi@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•Employers begin layoffs as Canada-U.S. trade war intensifies4·3 months agoThis all feels very bizarre and scary. What if we do cut them off? You wrote it yourself:
they need our minerals, water, trees, and our energy. We don’t need them for anything.
What will happen when they are choked? After all, they are a superpower with a military that can run us over. I know there’s talk about NATO and article 5. But, are we sure our allies want to go toe to toe with a superpower? Is Canada worth it for them?
There is great uneasiness in me about all of this because it just seems like negotiations are there to just string us along until they decide enough is enough.
opi@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•Cutting off oil is Canada's nuclear option. What would it mean if it happens?11·4 months agoI mean, I don’t think the French were here to do a show of force against the U.S. I think they were here to show us the sub because Canada is ready to buy some. Call it advertising. The French aren’t here to protect Canada. We’re alone in this. The sooner we realize this, the better.
Our best course of action is to put up front the failures of our past decisions and then move on to rectify those gaps. It’ll take time and a lot of effort and willingness of Canadians to join in on the new adventure of defending our nation, but it can be done. In that instance, and only that instance, can we then look to our history of our once great military and work to beat it.
opi@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•Cutting off oil is Canada's nuclear option. What would it mean if it happens?5·4 months agoehhh, I’m all in favour of defending Canada and would die doing so, but let’s maybe stop with the “come at us” stuff.
The U.S Military would absolutely, without a doubt, completely destroy us in our current state. There is no defending. There’s only retreat, right now. They may not be able to hold all of Canada, but they don’t want to, probably. They’ll settle with Alberta and Ontario.
Let’s face it. Canada fucked up by neglecting its military. We could argue the reasons why, but the reality is we’re learning a very valuable lesson right now - and it may be too late, too. It’ll take decades to build our defense. Let’s start now.
We are not the 1.1 million strong of WW2 anymore. We should stop riding the coattails of history and move on.
opi@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•It may provoke Trump, but Canada should cancel the purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the U.S.1·4 months agoHere’s the bad news. It’s not.
I guess what I was trying to get at was that it was at one point and that we could if we wanted to become that again. I wasn’t saying our current military is anywhere near the U.S military in any way, shape or form. I understand, quite clearly, just how out matched we are.
I was only putting forward the idea (which I agree with you, on) that we should absolutely rearm and become independent of their technology. We supply them the critical materials for their military. They need it. Maybe we should rethink that (not a popular idea, though).
opi@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•It may provoke Trump, but Canada should cancel the purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the U.S.311·4 months agoI don’t think Canada should be basing their defense decisions on the opinion and thin skin of the American government. Trying to force Canada, in any way, to purchase F35’s is fishy - not that that’s happening, of course.
Canada’s interests are for Canada. Not them. Also, maybe Canada should reboot their ventures into the Avro Arrow program again. That’ll ruffle some feathers. Canadian engineered military = quite formidable, I think.
