  • It was a long time ago but I remember it being difficult for me. That door of the cell closes behind you and then it’s just you and your time. My cell was totally empty except for the bed but it was comfortable enough. The slit of light through the window was my only companion for the duration. They gave me enough time to think about what I did and I knew that I when I was finally free, I never wanted to go back again. I vividly remember when I was finally released, my mom opened the door the spare bedroom and said “Your thirty minutes are done.” And I was free to go.

  • It’s crazy to me how a majority of congress cedes their power to the president. I get why, that way they don’t have to take responsibility but I put more responsibility for giving up their power. I know there is more to it but basically the office of President and the Supreme Court exist because of Acts of Congress. I know we are supposed to have checks on governmental powers between the three “co equal” branches but congress has gridlocked itself into towering the president so what ever they want.

I keep reading articles that claim that “behind the scenes even Republincan Congress members have problems with what Trump is doing”. If that’s the case, I wish more had the guts to say it rather than toeing the party line.

Bunch of scared, greedy, assholes, just waiting for their next Lobbyist handout.

  • It’s depends on the company and location. You’re correct there’s a lot of sexist morons out there, they exist in every industry and trade work definitely has more of that than say, IT. But, larger companies, especially in metropolitan areas seem to be better working environment for women in trade work.

I work in a very niche trade, historic buildings specifically, and I’ve found this area of expertise to be very open to women. The first company I worked for was in WV and half the company was women, including my foreperson. I went to a trade school to learn how to do this and over half of my classmates were women. I live in Colorado currently and there was a story on NPR yesterday of an expo focused on getting women into trade work.

Obviously, this is anecdotal but from my experience and perspective, there’s never been a better time for women to get into trade work. I don’t think anyone should have to deal with the sexist assholes and as I mentioned in my original post, once someone has the knowledge and the tools, they can start their own thing. Either go into business for themselves or start a company and keep the misogynists out.

  • Interesting article and you and another commenter already touched on the “Boo Hoo Poor Men” theme so I’ll skip that.

The part that struck me was that he only mentioned blue collar work as job that men can be proud of and not as another avenue for helping to fix the problem. I myself have a degree but moved to blue collar work a few years after college. It wasn’t a move I was thrilled to make but I found something that interests me and pursued it. I now make as much or more than many of my contemporaries with plenty of room for advancement because of my degree.

A few times I’ve mentioned this, I’ve had people comment on the fact that you ruin your body and health in some of those jobs. That’s only if you have a boss that doesn’t care about OSHA and the other regulatory bodies. I work around lead paint all day, every day and my blood lead levels have decreased over the last eight years. Proper training and a boss who wants to do things the right way and it’s less dangerous than getting behind the wheel of a car. If you work in the trades and feel unsafe or like you are being exposed to hazards regularly, then find a new company or start your own. Once you have to tools and the knowledge, it doesn’t take much to start doing work on your own.

Edited to add: my industry and many other blue collar industries are desperate for people.

  • In that context it sounds like they are using the word “sadly” in place of a word like “unfortunately”.

    “unfortunately, i’m referring to you.”

“Unfortunately, i think you should suffer and realize what an annoying piece of shit you are.”

Now, as to why it’s sad or unfortunate, I’m not sure. It could be that the person saying “sadly” likes the other person but is upset with them in the moment, or the person saying “sadly” could be trying to soften the blow of a mean comment like the one you used in the example, or they could be saying it’s sad/unfortunate for the person they are talking to.

    Just my two cents.

  • I have sterilized equipment in a an operating room. At the hospital I worked at, most instruments got sent to a central processing where there were first given a soak before going into a what was basically a large dish washer. Once the instruments were cleaned, they were sorted by hand and loaded into the appropriate instrument cases before being hand wrapped and taped. Some of the more specialized sets, delicate tools, and scopes were cleaned by myself or another OR aide.

So most surgical tools can definitely be automated but some of the more delicate or specialized tools do require an actual person to clean them.

This was ten years ago so who knows how technology has changed in that time.

How’d you get a picture of my local grocery store?

For real though, one of those cashiers would be on the self checkout helping 50 people at once and the cashier who has to actually scan stuff has 5 people in their line but all of them have enough food and goods for an army.

  • The quickest and easiest version I have for fact checking is to check the source of the story, usually that’s in article. Check the ownership of the company, who owns it and what’s their agenda, that usually leads to who is their audience, who are they writing for and why. Is it to sell ads or actually pass on info. Also, if some thing is too goo to be true, it usually is but do the fact checking to confirm.
