Parastoo Ahmadi sang while wearing a sleeveless dress during a concert livestreamed on her YouTube channel in December 2024. Iran’s laws ban public performances by women and require them to wear headscarves and modest clothing.

Iran’s judiciary launched proceedings against the 29-year-old after the video went viral, gaining millions of views, saying the performance was “in violation of the country’s legal and cultural regulations”.

An appeals court in Iran has confirmed a sentence of 74 lashes handed to a prominent singer who performed without the mandatory hijab,

Absolutely immoral demented and savage. Only religion can make otherwise “normal” people behave like outright sociopaths.

Religion didn’t make this happen, sick conservative fucks use religion as a scapegoat to be sick fucks. Pay attention most of these twats don’t actually follow their religious teachings, just cherry pick what they want to oppress people. Same shit we deal with in the USA with the bible thumpers.

Right, my problem is u said only religion can make regular people behave this way. My argument is that these are far from regular people, these are phychopaths that use religion as justification. No “regular” person comes to the conclusion somebody needs to be lashed because they didn’t wear a hijab.

Yes, though religion is more problematic due to their holy books having loads of these things they can and often use to justify it. Shit people will always exist, but let’s not pretend the situations are similar.

What…? The problem is that random people are easier to manipulate in religion. Getting random people to do horrible shit is harder without that.

True, atheists holding an ideology that is equally extreme to religion. I never claimed religion has exclusive right, it’s just the most efficient and most common way to lure people into insanity.

No those are in no way similar. they have to do with greed and selfishness.
Religion makes people evil without greed or selfishness.

No it’s the blind blame on religion, as if any of this has anything to do with spirituality that’s in part why I left. Redditors can’t think for two seconds about the headlines they’re reading, and neither can the guy I commented on. This shit is all about power and control, none of it is about any spirituality.

Religion enables things that the human nature (like wanting power, getting things) already has. This is not blind hate. It is more like how I can hate laws that discriminate or whatever. If we just boil everything down to such level of human nature, there is not much left to criticize, is there? Or the other way around, you would have to critique “everything” since most people want power, drowning the key problems.

Pretending it’s religion that’s enabling these evils distracts from the real evil in the room. Religion is merely a distraction, a tool to achieve the goal. The goal is always control and power. By placing the focus on religion, you’re saying that if we ‘solve’ religious extremism (this is a very racist train of thought that I can get into if you’d like), we’ll get rid of these terrible actors, while you and I and everybody with an inkling of critical thinking skills know damn well that if it wasn’t religion they’d use something else as that tool. Shared trauma is a big one that’s used often.

You want to remove religion? Won’t you be just another oppressive asshole then? What’s the difference between a regime that forces their religion onto people and a regime that forbids people from following their religion? Both are extremely authoritarian, you’re just pretending it’s for a more noble cause, while a religious person would say they’re doing it for the more noble cause. You’re no different.

Why would anyone not let Nazis do whatever they want? Don’t want to be a Nazi, do we?

The paradox of tolerance strikes again.
