13·11 days agoThat’s a pretty cool site. I always wanted to set up my own simple, html page for a personal blog. Lots of inspiration in these pages. Crazy there’s functional web pages less than 2.03KB in size.

News@lemmy.world•Pentagon orders states’ national guards to form ‘quick reaction forces’ for ‘crowd control’
5·19 days agoI think that’s a good point. Americans are heavily armed and those that are generally know how to use them, however a gun alone is not enough. You need to have the will and desire to use it.
How many Americans do you believe will do that?
How many Americans could even hold their own against a lightly armored squad?
I just don’t believe in the fantasy of American citizens fighting the US government with their pistols and hunting rifles. I think that’s a story they sell us to make us feel like we have power.

News@lemmy.world•Pentagon orders states’ national guards to form ‘quick reaction forces’ for ‘crowd control’
221·19 days agoI thought the same way until I read about the 2024 Venezuela presidential election.
Maduro created an alternative government body to subvert the existing parliament and had judges on his side that said it was legal for him to do this. That allowed him to consolidate more power and further secure his position as a dictator.
Even though everyone in Venezuela and across the world can see this blatant corruption, there’s little the people can legally do about it, because the government doesn’t work for them anymore. And you can see similar things happening in America. The gerrymandering of states, the use of military force on the citizenry, the threats of changing electoral laws, etc.
It happened there, and it can definitely happen here if we let it. That’s why its important we continue to protest, stand up, and make our voices heard lest we wind up like Venezuela or worse. That needs to be our cautionary tale, not our playbook.
Because, like it or not, the US is a major player in almost every sector. Research, media, trade, education, military, economic output, diplomacy, intelligence gathering etc., and a disruption of those sectors will have far reaching negative effects across the globe. There have already been significant negative effects and we’re not even through the first year of this administration. That’s why the world should care.
This has been my exact experience as well. I run updates whenever I log into the machine. Sometimes daily other times monthly depending on the computer, and very rarely have I run into errors.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What show or movie did you come to understand as a meditation on suffering and loss?
9·1 month agoSure, I’m not much of a critic, but I’ll write down some of my impressions.
The show centers on a group of workers who willingly “sever” themselves to work for a corporation, so fundamentally it’s already based on loss. The loss of a part of yourself. Then there’s the reasons that they chose to become severed in the first place, and the consequences that severing places on a person. Really, I saw it as a commentary on unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Apologies, I know that’s rather vague, but it really is a great show and I’d hate to spoil it for you. I highly recommend it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What show or movie did you come to understand as a meditation on suffering and loss?
5·1 month agoI think Severance was that show for me.
I couldn’t agree more. Miller has become increasingly vocal with his blatant fascist rhetoric and it’s honestly pretty terrifying to see that happening here in America.
This is what worked for me in transitioning to Linux. I had tried dual-booting previously and reverted to Windows for essentially the reasons the author listed. Ease of use, familiarity, etc. It was only once I fully committed and deleted my windows partition that I stuck with it, and I couldn’t be happier. Not having advertising spyware as my OS is top tier.

News@lemmy.world•Trump signs executive order criminalizing opposition to fascism
24·2 months agoI love that this is their sole response, hosted on a .org domain and that there’s nothing else there. No Contact Us page, no upcoming events, nothing to indicate they actually do anything or are even a group. Just that dumbass tweet and BLM support.
tbh I think I prefer it like this

News@lemmy.world•Utah Governor Laments He Can’t Blame an Immigrant for Kirk’s Death
4·2 months agoYes, but the difference is that he’s the governor of the state of Utah. He’s supposed to represent all the residents of his state. By choosing a side he alienates a significant portion of his populace for no apparent political gain or reason.

1·3 months agoExactly. Unfortunately, wars do happen frequently, so maybe that’s why OP is seeing more Gaza genocide news in his feed.
Also, small anecdote, I see as many or more articles about Ukraine just browsing all.
