collapse of the old society@slrpnk.net•How are you living amid collapse? What are you working on? How can we get through this?English
0·18 days agoSlowly thinking up the many different parts for a machine that replaces the agricultural/forestry industry.
First the raw inputs will be processed with ultra-sonic frequencies that have been shown to have the ability to break apart (not-so)forever chemicals. With more work this process could be applied to break down many different inputs into basic molecules/elements that can then be ‘knitted’ together into usable proteins by filtering them through membrane gates (or maybe by shooting them through a magnetic field like a mass spec) so the right elements or molecules can interact with the right enzymes at the right time in a pseudo-cytoplasm.
A lot of things about this are really up in the air, but essentially it’s greatly simplifying the entire process of food/textile production by focusing only on the enzymes and cellular mechanisms that produce the desired compounds (cellulose, essential amino acids, etc.).
I’m not really sure how this will all come together, but I hope it will at least be a start to having truly self contained human habitation. For most people in this thread I imagine a type of appliance that can turn dirt into some type of edible mush (like kibble from The Expanse universe). I hope it will at least provide proper sustenance without relying on extensive tracts of land being unsustainably used for human industrial activities (like agriculture). Would also be able to create cotton/linen, but would probably have to be processed further.
Again, this is just an idea I’ve had for a little while. It has a whole host of issues, especially ones I won’t know about until I actually build a prototype if I get to that point on time.
*I first thought of this as a way to grow wood in a bio-reactor, but the most pressing issue in the world will be access to clean water and food, which I hope this machine will be able to provide both given some amount of electricity and starting water.

0·21 days agoMasks like the one the woman is wearing in the photo do nothing to alleviate it as well. Needs to be K/N95 or a P100. Those blue ones that are synonymous with COVID do nothing for particulate matter.

“Our pseudo-democratic system gave us this shitstain for a leader. We’re sorry. Here he is, do with him as you please.”
Though at that point I suspect the US Military will be in the white house and I don’t see that as any better.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Where would one find common ish 90s vhs streams/torrents?English
5·26 days agoAll of those do have multiple torrents available on the bay. I suspect you’ll have to search them up one by one and open each page in a new tab, then go through those tabs as you add them to your client.
It would be cool to have just one massive torrent that has all the movies you want; I can’t find anything like that though, I suspect it would be too big to seed the whole thing all the time and would quickly die. :(

4·26 days agoReally depends on what happens with phytoplankton; if they can adapt well enough to survive the excessive heat. Some of them can but others are dying out. If we lose all of them, then everything that breaths oxygen is extremely fucked since they make ~70-80% of that oxygen. Then we only have plants and forests like the amazon to make O2 (and we all know how that ones going), and then we would also have to deal with the gasses produced by all the oceans on the face of the earth dying and everything in them rotting… if they’re not par-boiled.
