I was doing that just fine 30/40 years ago with BBS, newsgroups, and later with forums such as Lemmy. Social media put a name or a face on people, and was combined with the regular “eternal septembers,” but it didn’t bring anything useful to the conversation IMHO.

IMHO it’s not authoritarian. Your speed in public space should be public. I struggle every day with fucking idiots in BMW or VW who almost hit my car because they can’t drive properly. I wouldn’t mind seeing them in jail if it meant some kind of control on my own speed.

I live in the south of France. I see cops cars using speed radars once a year. Once a fucking year. They do NOT enforce anything. If they did, half the population would be unemployed.

If you use your email, it’s anonymous but you have to use your email which is almost never anonymous and has your phone number. Also you sometimes have to “Create an app-specific password” that delta chat will use and gain full access to your email account, which is way worse than signal or any other application. And for some accounts, you have to use your real password, and maybe disable the spam protection.

In the past, the CTO of a company destroyed the Linux servers by putting random commands in bash (he only knew Windows). They tried to put the blame on me, I printed all the emails where I warned them that it was the worst idea ever and said something like “you suck, it’s your fault, don’t try to sue me, I quit.” There is no need to put your whole life (personal and money) in danger because one idiot cannot do his job.
