  • I won’t use Ubuntu Desktop now, but I used it for 6 years: 16 to 22, and loved it for many reasons. I left it for two reasons:

    1. Snaps
    2. Trying to get bridged networking going for VMs in Boxes ended up wrecking my network settings and I couldn’t get them back to normal. With more expertise I could have probably fixed it, but I realised it’s too easy to do things that I can’t fix.

So, I went to NixOS for the declarative setup. It’s not always easy especially for niche cases , but at least I always have a working backup. Yes, there are other options, but I like NixOS so I plan to stick with it for now.

My kids use Bazzite and I like that too.

  • More hate leads to more wars, and we could do with less of those in the world. If you hate them, and brand them your enemy, you push them further away.

Be better than them. Be stronger than them. Educate them and show them how to improve. It’s harder than hating them but ultimately more productive. Hate is easy.

The OP was about an email account being deleted. It said nothing about Greenland.

I’m just trying to quell the hate speech. Hating a whole country because it’s idiot leader says and does stupid things will only lead to bad things.

Using words like “enemy” and other hateful things about various countries and groups was how Trump energised and mislead people to vote for him. By meeting it with more hate we just make it worse. Surely we are better than this? The world has enough hate already without adding to it.

By all means, deride the actions of a madman and his puppet corporations, but to hate an entire country will just make this worse.

Here’s a quote with equal relevance:

“When did Saruman the Wise abandon reason for madness?”

… And by “equal relevance” I mean not at all.

Seriously though, a corporation cancelled the account of someone who should never have been using it for official business in the first place. More reason to be less reliant on US corporate services and develop open European alternatives. But, terms like “enemy” over this? I thought we were better than that. That’s MAGA level escalation and hatred.

    Let’s rise above this.

I’ve been boycotting Amazon (UK) for a few years now. It’s not easy! Sometimes it doesn’t take much longer to source items, but other times it takes way longer. I have limits though, and occasionally I end up caving-in and just using Amazon, but it’s getting rarer all the time. Now I use them once or twice per year. I tried using onbuy for a while, but we got a couple of faulty items from them and their support completely ignored me, so I stopped using them. Generally, here are some of my most common alternatives:

general stuff and gifts: Argos, ebay, etsy
    tech: overclockers, ebuyer, scan.co.uk
electronics: John Lewis, AO, Richer Sounds
    books/dvds: hive.co.uk, Waterstones, WH Smith
    pharma: boots, simpleonlinepharmacy, well
household: Robert Dyas, Dunelm, John Lewis
    pets: zooplus
    spare parts: buyspares.co.uk

And for a wishlist alternative I use wishlist.com. (edited to fix formatting)
