You can still sideload apps. While the change is ridiculous, you still can sideload apps. They just make it significantly more painful to enable sideloading.
I’m the developer of the Photon client. Try it out

having llm output in your training set is irrecoverable
i used to think model collapse was an actual problem for LLMs as well, but it turns out that most popular models nowadays use intentionally synthetic data for things like reasoning traces and math. a lot of models (like gemini) also have subtle watermark patterns that let the trainers just filter out llm responses for factual data

i doubt that Lemmy is being intentionally scraped by AI companies, otherwise it’d give their LLMs severe brain damage.
Gnome seems to have amnesia whenever using sftp. disconnect once? say goodbye to ALL of your bookmarked network folders even after reconnecting.

that’ll show them, Google will be in shambles after some random app with like 1k downloads that makes them negative revenue threatens to REMOVE themselves from the PLAY STORE!!!
while it’s not great, a ton of websites did this to themselves by turning every 1 paragraph piece of information into a 5 page listicle with ads splattered all over the place. I don’t think AI search stuff would be nearly as popular if websites didn’t make their content impossible to view.

Local is just communities from your server. You’ll see comments and posts from other servers, just not communities from other servers

It doesn’t depend on your server. since lemmy is federated, you’re gonna see the same content and people no matter what server you’re on (subject to maybe defederation and things like that). There’s still a general Lemmy “community” that spans across every instance.

@grok is this true
What is happening on lemmy brethren
This is an ai image posted like a few months ago, and now it gets reposted without credit, and it’s an ai image???

on my laptop yk
Im surely not the only one who thinks this article is ai generated? it spams the exact same structure and has the typical smells
the linux kernel is on that list, bro it’s time to switch!
Systemd haters when you use systemd instead of UltraXinitializer made in 2005 by John Init in C-- that requires you to manually write init scripts and has 894 critical severity CVEs
too bad. Mandatory Internet connection to enable the ai enhancement features, and as a bonus uses built in Infrared sensors to upload your walking habits straight to Palantir. Updates are 2gb each because what the hell are patches or deltas. Uses 24w on idle for some reason. Includes agentic ai!

ai piracy is still possible! Break into the openai servers and yoink the gpt 5.2 weights. and then publish them

Blorp absolutely does not “suck” and this user either has a problem or is just generally rude.
throughout my nearly 3 years making Photon I’ve had my fair share of hate comments, including one thread on a post, by someone encouraging people to check photon out, filled with people absolutely dunking on it.
your software is great enough to be noticed and hosted by several Lemmy and piefed instances, and you’ve got nearly 1000 or more users on a client for a super niche platform. you’ve done something right.
speaking from experience, hate comments really do dig into you even amongst a sea of positivity, but I hope you know that the opinion of 1 immature person does not matter in the grand scheme of things.
one more thing: people are much more likely to speak out when they have a problem versus when they enjoy some software. I guarantee you for every person either leaving feedback or complaining, there are 10 more silently enjoying your app.
The situation is pretty confusing, but you’re still gonna be able to side load unverified apps. The “advanced flow” that makes sideloading obnoxious to do is specifically for unverified apps, whereas verified apps (where devs have to fork up their ID to google) can be installed without any hassle.
