I find something really endearing about these sorts of isolated cultures opening up specifically for social media. The fact that someone can grow up in these decidedly un-modern villages and step into the role of a social media influencer is crazy. More than that is that I find it very very sweet. The documentary mentions communal marriage used to be an embarrassing topic for the village until they saw the online reaction to them - which must have been validating in a collective sense.
For all of the ills of social media I find stuff like that really cool

My experience with AI is pretty limited to what I can fuck around with on my own system. So I’m not seeing its energy use as any bigger of a problem than how capitalists will be using it to further trim down production and steal even more wealth. I don’t think anything about the current state of AI is great, but that has more to do with the current state of the world than AI itself.
In my perfect future, even if peak generative AI was an energy-draining unviable mess of a technology, the novelty would still be enough that I’d want to see it in a specialty museum, or the service available to the public in some way.
I always thought AI was really cool, like inherently and on the face of it. Generative AI makes you feel like you’re out of Star Trek sometimes. The distaste so many people have with AI comes down to the fact it violates copyright in a nebulous way (lib shit) and that it’s a genuine threat to the livelihood of artists (real shit.) It will be easier to feel optimistic about AI when we can be sure we’re living in an economy that prioritizes lives over profit, because only in that society can generative AI and artists truly live together peacefully.

Kennedy said he planned to dedicate money generated from a sales tax on cannabis products to “creating wellness farms—drug rehabilitation farms, in rural areas all over this country.” He added, “I’m going to create these wellness farms where they can go to get off of illegal drugs, off of opiates, but also illegal drugs, other psychiatric drugs, if they want to, to get off of SSRIs, to get off of benzos, to get off of Adderall, and to spend time as much time as they need—three or four years if they need it—to learn to get reparented
Sounds like a replacement for the cheap agricultural labour immigrants presented.
Space race number two but the US isn’t even going to participate this time.
Australia, already infamous for detoothed unions, just signed the death knell for any serious collective action in a legal sense with this one. Unions already cannot strike without express permission and a promise they won’t impact economic livelihood, now they can’t even grow to a certain size and power without the threat of being placed under administration.
Oh, and it was the government party supposedly made of labor unions that did this. Still waking up every day pissed off about this.
I’m so glad Australia has been such a good
vassalally to the states, because the states sure do pay it back. I mean, they wouldn’t set up military bases on our land unless they really loved us.
