I have an issue with it personally. We already struggle enough with our cultural identity not being influenced by the U.S. and them seeing as a “safe haven” extension of the U.S. rather than as a sovereign nation, and now we’re actively bringing those people in.

Personally I don’t care about generation gaps, I want this to be more thorough. In the same way I don’t see Jim Carrey, Seth Rogen, or other celebrities that spend over 90% of their time in the U.S. as “Canadian”, I don’t see the average person who spends all their time in U.S. as “Canadian”.

If we want to take in people genuinely at risk, we remove the Safe Third Country agreement. If this country wanted to right historical wrongs, they could have been more specific rather than do this blanket ruling. Like I’m really looking forward to people who have no true connection to this place whatsoever coming in and doing things like complaining about CanCon laws because Dr. Phil isn’t on TV enough at best, and moving our politics to the right at worst.

I don’t want to see a single American coming up this way if they’re either not in danger and seeing us as a “backup” for inconveniences in life they’re not utilising their civic duties to address, or if they’re in danger and did this to themselves with their voting record (or lack of). If there’s anybody we should be bringing in less of right now, it’s Americans.

I don’t know about the UK, but this makes sense to me.

Working retail here in Canada, common rule is to prevent shoplifting through having eyes on suspicious people. However, you never go after them yourself when they leave the store, or even do so much as accuse them of stealing while they’re in the store. You make security, who’re specialised for the task and are workers with a contract company, aware and they recover the shoplifted merchandise.

It’s for safety reasons and to avoid different lawsuits. The store doesn’t want to be held legally liable for injuries or possible discrimination.

I’m mixed on this. I can understand this specific bill from the UCP, but even if they genuinely have the same concerns as I do, I don’t trust them to do what’s right to address the issues that MAiD has.

I do think MAiD is way too accessible, and has been used as a means to shelve the issues of the system for disabled people. Like, even a lot of Track 1 applications have been found to be from people who were denied proper access to pain relief.

Also, maybe people would be less inclined to access MAiD as an option if we made life easier and more accessible for them? The UCP has already expressed interest in making life harder for disabled people by cutting the $200 from AISH for those accessing the Canadian Disability Benefit, which can already be a hassle to apply for.

Wish I was able to donate plasma, but the nurses at Canadian Blood Services advised against it in my case since they only want me doing whole blood seeing that I’m O-.

I can understand this, but I can’t help but worry about friend of mine from Ukraine who came here through a work permit and has been trying to get refugee status since then at the risk of being sent back now that their permit has expired. They didn’t apply as a refugee initially since they came here a few months before the invasion.

They’ve told me the struggles with the waitlists, and it just sounds so frustrating. I understand student visa fraud being an issue, but doing a blanket cutoff like this will put lives at risk.
