I hear about emergency preparation in certain countries like the UK or Japan (as they anticipate either a incoming cyberattack or another Iranian conflict) in case things end up becoming as if its the rapture all of a sudden. However, the weird thing is that neither are discussed openly on MSM or shown on the top feed of social media (perhaps due to censorship or hate being called out for fearmongering).
Its everywhere. My bank has made it virtually impossible for me to wire rent money to my office at work because they suddenly want a piece of information that my office building doesnt have. I have had to use my spouse’s bank to wire the money. On top of that, its going crazy with scam emails, phonecalls and texts from baf actors who try and convince us that we owe taxes and VAT and need to upgrade our access codes to our online personal info and yadda yadda. Its all over the place. Leaked security info. Attempts to abuse people’s personal info. Constant attacks.
Welcome to the most boring world war. The cyber world war.
I started stocking up on canned food and water shortly after Russia attacked Ukraine in 22. Just to feel a bit less stressed about everything. I live in Denmark, and our government and military has been vocal for years about stocking up on supplies and how much and what things to buy. Lost most of that stuff when we moved into a house, so we are starting over and stocking up a little bit at the time. My spouse didn’t take it seriously the first couple of years, but has come around recently so we are working on it. Still need power banks and more batteries and a new supply of bottled water. At this point in time, I no longer feel distress about it all because it has been ongoing for enough years that it’s just kind of part of your everyday life now. That some crazy cyber attack could happen at any moment and screw your entire country over for hours or days. My goal is to have enough supplies to survive in the dark for two weeks. One of the perks of moving into a house: suddenly you have the space to stock up on supplies.
Is what it is.
Heard this lovely quote that I hold near and dear to my little heart: the man who sleeps with a machette under his pillow is a fool every night, but one.
UK government is asking people to be prepared and have 3 days of food and water ready. To make an emergency plan like for a fire and to check in with your neighbours in case they need support.
It can be a bit of both. Can’t speak to the UK but in Japan you’re constantly asked to become a prepper because we don’t need no stinking strait of Hormuz to threaten us, the earth we live on is doing that all by itself.
Japan is in a bit of a pickle because it relies on the US for defense to quite a high degree. Nobody here thinks the orange’s adventure in Persia is a good idea. But since he reacts like a toddler nobody really dares speak out in public. So the only thing the government can do is ask companies to find ways around the closed off strait. And then the PHP thing happened. And a big data breach. Our ongoing cost of living crisis is amplified by a weak currency. The crises are piling up over here as well. Naturally, the government issues guidance. They can’t do much else.
There have been weird developments in IT thanks to so-called AI. Along with a limited number of advantages at current, it presents a major threat. It provides a Google translate tool for normal speak to code with a reliability of Google translate from 15 years ago. The North Koreans who hacked Sony had to know what they’re doing. We’re now in a place where you can just ask your tailored LLM agent to hack a company and you don’t have to know how to do that. The agent will come up with ways nobody thought of. Offence in IT tends to be faster than defence. So the heightened threat level is not a farce. The impotent government response can be though.
Polish government is ramping up the prepper rhetoric and propaganda about Russian sabotage as well. Something’s gonna go down
Isn’t there currently a conflict between the president and the Parliament in Poland?
there is (a nothingburger about a very bourgeois useless court, mostly), but the prepper bullshit was ramped up before that
Thanks
Every UK newspaper has run a story on it and the government have launched an online campaign. There’s no conspiracy, you’re just oblivious.
There have been cyber attacks spoiling food in shops by changing freezer temperature. Maybe that has prompted it.
But here in California, it’s standard practice to have supplies in. I have gallons of water, tins of food plus long-life emergency food bars. Also a small solar panel and battery packs.
There could be a bad earthquake, or even the Cascadia Subduction Zone could slip.
oh btw california has about 40 million people but only produces enough calories for about 10 - 20 million people.
They have been fearmongering for years.
The Russians are coming any minute now.
If not, the Chinese, Iranians or whoever we choose to antagonize or does not bend to our western democratic values.the major issue isn’t the danger, but the uncertainty. we’re facing unprecedentes times and it’s to hope for that everyone retains their calm in these times. it just takes 1 crazy actor to do a lot of harm, so it’s better to be prepared.
I haven’t heard this in Japan
