We pay to subsidize fossil fuel production. We pay for the consequences. Governments spend billions fighting fires, rebuilding communities, compensating disaster victims and treating the growing health burden from climate change.

Then those same governments spend billions more expanding the industry making those disasters steadily worse.

Canada is hardly alone on this Kafkaesque merry-go-round. A recent Bloomberg analysis found that, around the world, “about 59 per cent of all money spent on the fossil fuel system came from taxpayers in 2015. By 2025, that had climbed to 68 per cent.” Considering the fossil fuel shocks and Trumpist warmongering, this year may set a new record.
