Thoughts on this?
John Healey has resigned because he thinks the government isn’t going to allocate enough money for defence.
Should the UK spend more on defence?

I think he’s a war hawk who blusters about threat and patriotism while he would be sitting with his feet up while others do the dying and killing on his behalf.
We are no more at threat of war now than we have at any point since the end of WW2. Our Chief of the Defense Staff uses ChatGPT and gambling sites to tell us how at risk we are. I have no doubt our Defense Minister is doing similar and either has been in the bubble of lies so long he’s forgotten it’s bollocks and is now convinced the Russians will be storming the beaches any minute (despite their preoccupation with the disastrous invasion of a land neighbour). Or, he’s a greedy bastard wishing to line some pockets and is having a hissy fit on those people’s behalf at being told no.

So, at minimum at a fairly high threat level since in that time the UK has been involved in many wars.
It is more accurate to think of us already being at a low-level conflict with Russia: they’re carrying out assassinations in the UK, cyberwarfare, disinformation, electoral interference, that kind of thing. Outside the UK’s borders they’re damaging undersea infrastructure, jamming GPS and shutting down airports with drones. It’s quite plausible that Russia will escalate this low-level warfare, especially if the war in Ukraine continues to go badly, to try and dissuade Western assistance to Ukraine. That escalation carries with it the real risk of a major conflict for the UK.
Conversely, if Russia emerges victorious from the war in Ukraine, they will be stronger, emboldened, and unlikely to stop there.
So playing down those risks is sticking your head in the sand. And all of this is happening at a time when we can no longer rely on the ally that provides irreplaceable intelligence, logistics and air defence.
I agree with this. Russia is already dangerous, and has committed crimes on British soil in the last few years. I agree with the person you replied to on some points - yes war is bad for ordinary people and workers, and yes rich people profit from it. But history shows that countries that can’t defend themselves can get conquered and treated in terrible ways.
