Of all the technological change I’ve lived to see, glue and tape have improved the most.

yesman@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Has anyone here dealt with a pest issue in your home? How serious is/was it? How was it dealt with?3·3 hours agoWhere I live, there are American cockroaches. The good thing is that they don’t nest in homes, so their presence isn’t a commentary on your cleanliness. But they do wander into homes looking for food. And guys, they’re huge! Like you can hear them crawling.
I asked the pest control guy if there was a way to be finally rid of them and he said “move”.
yesman@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do people let their children stream themselves on YouTube?18·2 days agoA cousin uploaded a video to YT of her 4yo daughter playing with her friends in one of those inflatable pools. Just for family and the like. It was getting 500 views a day before she took it down. Creepy!

At this point in my life I’d barely traveled out of my red State; believed in Jesus; and the only contact I’d had with politics was Rush Limbaugh. Honestly, not ending up a Trump supporter with my demographics is like Neo-level bullet dodging.

Even if Republicans believe their own bullshit, they’re still fucking it up.
Many of these early communities on Atheism, which captured me for their sensibility and anti-orthodoxy, evolved into anti-progressivism and eventually evolved into the Redpill and Manosphere which is how millions of young boys today engage with their gender.
Everybody says I’m crazy when I point out that skeptic spaces in the 2010s were just as vulnerable as gamer spaces to hateful ideology. Islamophobia and Western Chauvinism were the red-pills of r/atheism.
In Reeve’s book “Black pill”, she notices a pattern in the alt-right leadership of terminally-online young men who are socially awkward, good test-takers, and high-IQ*, while having little academic, material, or dating success. Alt-right ideology was heavily correlated to autism. But Reeves points out that these were largely self-diagnosed “autists” who “identify” as having the one disability popularly conceived as a mental advantage. As opposed to all the other disabilities that make your life unworthy of living.
*IQ is bullshit

Wow, galaxy brain stuff.

Speculation is useless because the NTSB will account for every paint scratch and stripped bolt. (assuming that, the NTSB will exist and be competent post DOGE)

We’ve had about 9 different tariff regimes (all responding to the same “emergency”) in a little over two months. Trump thought he could ride into Tokyo on Godzilla’s shoulders only to raise a white flag out the bottom of a footprint moments later.
Applesauce and sausage gravy.
It shouldn’t be a surprise since pork pairs so well with sweet foods, but it’s as essential to biscuits and gravy as hot-sauce.

Please explain what Chamberlain was supposed to have done differently. Explain how he was supposed to protect Czechoslovakia with zero military presence and zero contact with any resistance. Explain why Churchill’s plan to protect Poland was identical to Chamberlain’s plan to protect Czechoslovakia. (thoughts and prayers)
No, the “Chamberlain could have stopped Hitler if only…” meme is reactionary missive against diplomacy. It makes perfect sense, if you don’t think about it.
There were two kinds of people in our movement back then, the conservatives and the reactionaries.
No Mr. Brooks, you were all reactionaries. Just because MAGA doesn’t go around quoting Edmund Berk doesn’t mean that they don’t understand him, perhaps better than you. What did Burke advocate for if not for the French Revolutionaries to be brought low and for the kings to be restored?
You’re heroes resent extending political power to the bourgeoisie, so please stop talking about what conservatives thinkers want to do for the “working people”. Fuck off.
yesman@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Donald Trump threatens new 50% tariffs on ChinaEnglish18·13 days agoWho wants to bet that the idea of retaliatory tariffs wasn’t gamed out beforehand and they have no strategy?
It seems like if you want a trade war with China, you’d want partners to help you apply pressure and replace Chinese goods you can’t do without. Maybe somewhere like Vietnam for cheap labor; Canada for rare-earth minerals; and the EU to buy expensive American goods and services. Oh no.

As a user, I hate when an OS gets in my way. Or insists that there is one right way to do something.
As the tech support guy in my family, I’m grateful that windows denies permission, has big guard rails, and forces you to do updates.
