I’m a college professor. I’m very aware of textbook prices. Most students don’t read the textbook anyway, even if its something you want them to read everyday.
For intro classes, I use openstax, which are available free online. For upper-level classes, I try to pick non major publishers, ie not pearson or cengage, with much more reasonably priced books.
My version of this meme would be the prof begging the students to actually read the book he/she picked out that is free or cheap so that they are prepared for class and the students rolling their eyes and instead just going to chatgpt or chegg…

For combining pdfs, pdftk from the command line is my goto. The command line interface for it isn’t too complicated.
rescue_toaster@lemm.eeto Linux@lemmy.world•Linux install on laptop for a complete noobEnglish4·4 months agoLinux mint or fedora are great options. I’d probably recommend mint as usually geared more to those switching from windows and the forums and communities might be more helpful for beginners.
I’d avoid ubuntu these days. While not horrendous, i’ve run into enough annoyances with their snap package manager that there’s just no reason to learn this additional thing for a beginner.

So i went and listened to some Camel. He did a very good job making Opeth sound like Camel. Its not my thing and thus i haven’t really been into Opeth for a while.
New album is okay in my opinion.
I’m pretty sure it’s a cucumber plant. I planted them for the first time this year and they grow those little things to grab onto stuff for support. It’s really neat!
Used to be in the metallica club and went to one of their small shows when st anger was released and except for one or two st anger songs, they played all old stuff.
I’m into all the classic swedish melodeth bands and there were a ton of really good shows in the 2000s. Perhaps one of ny favorites of those was when Dark tranquillity, Insomnium, and swallow the sun toured together. I think There was a 4th swedish band on that tour but cant remember who. Maybe soilwork? Or maybe it was soilwork and not DT.
I saw DT and soilwork a zillion times but only saw insomnium and swallow the sun that once.
First time i saw Devin Townsend was pretty special too.

I have it configured to only show one row of favorites, which are categorized as “pinned - manually sorted”. Than the rest of my favorites are seen when i swipe to app drawer.
rescue_toaster@lemm.eeto Android@lemdro.id•End of an era: Nova Launcher's parent company lays off practically everyoneEnglish3·9 months agoCan do homescreen icons. It has a widgets “pane”. You don’t place them on the home screen but put all widgets together than swipe to widgets. You can configure kvaesitso so it’s not too different from stock android experience.
I have 5 “favorite” apps at bottom of screen, above the search bar, similar to stock android.
I swipe left for my app drawer, which allows for more pinned favorites above full list.
I swipe up for all my widgets.
Swipe down for notifications, like stock.
Swipe right for my camera app.

But it can be used as a regular icon tapping launcher - it has a regular app drawer - which is how i use it. I don’t think it should market itself as a “search-focused” launcher.

I’ve looked at the manpages but was a bit overwhelmed and didn’t try to make my own script. Your solution gives me motivation to do so. I also use sway and pipewire. Though I use fuzzel for my launcher.
rescue_toaster@lemm.eeto Linux@lemmy.ml•Which CLI app/utility you wish there was a GUI for?4·9 months agopavucontrol. I switch between usb headset and my external speakers all the time. Continually going to this gui is kind of annoying.
I switched from ubuntu to debian when 12 was released and it’s been fine. Only thing i was worried about was running WoW via lutris but had no issues.
So when my SO windows pc died we bought some newish parts and i installed debian on it as well. Also installed chrome since that’s her browser of choice. She’s still getting used to gnome, but all she needs is browser, WoW, and libreoffice, which is close enough that it hasnt been an issue. She doesn’t even know how to update the system.
