I’m not Catholic any more, for decades, but it was nice to know the pope was from my “turf” of the world instead of yet another European. Plus he was considerably humbler than other popes, the instructions for his own burial are a good example. (In fact a lot of people I know get surprised when you mention that he was a Jesuit instead of a Franciscan. Not just because of his papal name - but because all that “think on the poor” discourse is extremely Franciscan.)

His Easter 2025 message is worth a read, regardless of religion.

There are four imperatives you could use here:

• kauf or kaufe - used with “du” (informal, singular)
• kauft - used with “ihr” (informal, plural)
• kaufen - used with “Sie” (formal, sing. or plural)

All four would be grammatically correct here, but using the informal forms towards someone who you aren’t acquainted with sounds a bit too bossy, too rude. So I’d recommend using the “Sie” forms instead.

I also recommend changing the verb. As @superkret@feddit.org said, the Nazi used the slogan “Kauft nicht bei Juden” (don’t buy from Jews), and the association is still strong.

What if you were to say instead “buy from Europe”? I don’t speak Lithuanian but “pirk iš Europos” sounds a bit more succinct.

Italian: “compra europeo” sounds better. Two reasons:

1. wrong verb - “acquistare” is more like “to acquire, to get”; “comprare” is closer to what you want.
2. wrong conjugation - you’re telling someone what they should do, that requires the imperative, not the infinitive.

The Portuguese one sounds okay. For the dialects spoken in Europe “compra” would probably sound a wee bit more casual, but “compre” is still 100% fine.

Zungenwurst? I ate it once. It’s delicious, but really hard to find where I live.

Beef tongue sandwich: oh, I like how this sounds like. Typically I eat beef tongue in tomato sauce with peas, siding a potato mash; might as well sub the carb with bread to see how it turns out.

Livermush sandwich: liver pate is delicious, so I’d be tempted to try it, but to be honest I don’t like the idea of mixing cornmeal with the liver to make it into some sort of loaf.

As typical his videos are spot on. The analogy is perfect here:

• Roman Republic - there’s an imperium system, to limit the power of [pro]magistrates. Caesar violates it by having an army in Italy as a proconsul.
• USA - judiciary orders exist, among other things, to limit the power of the executive. Trump violates it by refusing to facilitate García’s return.

I did mention other crucial red lines due to his violations of the first amendment, but this one is irreversible. And while I expect locals to try to move the river south (like he says in the video), much like people do here towards Bolsonaro or a potential successor, from the outside things are often clearer.

Remember America Lat[r]ina. I’m not even talking about Brazil [the country that I pay taxes to], but Mexico and the UPCA - they’ve been playing along USA for so long that they developed Stockholm Syndrome. Without USA they’re turning their eyes to China, same shite but different continent.

I think that the right approach, from the British government, would be to be proactive: create laws banning book banning. And book defacement should be investigated, when it follows a pattern (as it does in this case).

Anyway dictatorships hate 1) insiders who see the outside, and 2) outsiders who see the inside. So both Trump+Bukele are making sure Garcia stays in the right North American potatoship, instead of the wrong one.

I’ve done something similar in the past, based on this video (in Portuguese). So here are a few tips.

Use some firm material for the box. For example, if using cardboard, reinforce it by gluing multiple layers together.

The black paint is obligatory, it simply doesn’t work well without it. Mine was painted outside and inside. Ideally with a paint that protects the material from drippings.

For the side holes (the video I linked doesn’t have them, but my box had), tulle works well. Mechanical resistance is not an issue, but the size of the mesh is.

For the middle, I didn’t use a net, because it’s a pain to clean. Instead I run a string through the box, like this:

As you knot the loose ends together, the string becomes firm enough to hold a metal grill in place. Then when it’s time to clean you just need to take off the grill, untie the knot, and clean it. Granted I used the box to cure pork and beef, so drippings were a concern, but even if you’re using the box for vegs alone remember some (like tomatoes) are rather goopy.

If you’re using transparent plastic instead of glass, a few needle holes work like a charm to prevent condensation.

If you live with someone with a “dunno what’s this → I don’t need it → throw it away” mindset, make sure to explain what the thing is. Otherwise your homemade dehydrator will have the same fate as mine.

It’s pretty much ethnic anglo stuff.

If it’s for fish-and-chips lemon juice is a good sub. Otherwise white wine vinegar; note however that depending on the amounts the taste difference will be noticeable.

…I think that the reason is twofold: 1) it’s easier to plug advertisement into the new chat system, and 2) chat only works in new.reddit so they can use it as an excuse to deprecate yet another old.reddit system.
