News@lemmy.world•SNAP Recipients Crushed by Democrats Caving on Shutdown: “They Just Wasted It All”English
2·1 hour agomost people will keep voting for their party even when their house is literally set on fire by their representative.
They’ll vote and they’ll cheer, because they were told the house needed to be set on fire. And they’ll believe this because every single news organization in the country - from local to national - is part of a holding company owned by Arson Inc.
At some point you have to look past politics as a collection of “stupid” individuals and see a machine that exists to manufacture consent.

1·1 hour agoThe two party system is baked into the system
Two parties is a national phenomena. For most states, it’s a single dominant party and a rump opposition.

2·1 hour agoI hope they all rot in hell for selling out.
They’ll be fetted at dinner parties hosted by the Responsible Moderates For A Wonderful Future PAC and offered board seats on shell companies that handle $40B in tax evaded funded when they retire.
Maybe, I do think there’s a difference.
There are parks with full blown gym setups in them. All body weight exercises and resistance machines, for practical reasons. But they exist.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Should parents who refuse childhood vaccines be liable if their choice harms someone else’s kid?English
31·9 hours agoI mean, from a simple enforcement perspective “prove that you’re vaxxed” runs into the same problem as “prove that you’re a legal resident”.
Access to health care, access to documentation of that health care, and the ability to produce it on demand all require certain amenities that marginalized people don’t have. It’s a rule that inevitably penalizes people for being poor.
Shy of getting people chipped and slotting your medical records into the same system that we use for criminal enforcement, the folks enforcing the laws will default to the assumption that you’re at fault until you can prove otherwise.

Guy in California in a bright blue district with a landslide turnout: “Well, I’m feeling disappointed with the party. I’m going to vote Green instead.”
Guy’s Grandmother in a Purple State swing district who voted for Trump in 2016 because she didn’t like Hillary: “You fucking idiot! You’ve fallen for Putin’s propaganda! You’re going to cost us the election!”

They were passable at best. Finicky and imprecise more often than not.

648·17 hours agoWhat is up with Valve and their obsession with those stupid touchpads? I hated that on the old Steam D-Pad. Hypersensitive seemingly every moment except when you needed it to be.
The XBox and the PS figured out how to make traditional controllers very well. Nintendo loves to get freaky with it and does a better than average job of innovating in the space. But Valve just seems to want to cobble together spare parts into a janky whatever the hell this is. I don’t get it.
Whomever is making these things, you don’t have to keep doing this. Just be normal!

I’ll do you one better. “Websites should default to the minimal cookies option, with settings confined to a website option menu that does not occlude the entrance page.”
Talk to any lawyer. Alcohol, more than coke, tends to be their poison. But as a profession, near universally, its a trainwreck.
Meanwhile, doctors smoke like chimneys. Software developers love their ket and mushrooms. God only knows what investment bankers are using.
I wouldn’t call it unique. Just easy to toss out names everyone is familiar with.

Also doesn’t help that the cookie banners were a kind of malicious compliance. They were made deliberately difficult to navigate around when you didn’t immediate hit “accept everything unequivocally”.
That the response to this malicious compliance is a retreat rather than a doubling down suggests the EU regulators are compromised by the industry and this isn’t a popular reform in any meaningful sense.
“Jobs Americans don’t want to do (at the price point the business is offering)”
So its hard to get an IT professional to work at job at $15/hr in the US. Easier in Southeast Asia. Consequently, we outsource a ton of IT work overseas.
Similarly, construction work is dangerous and exhausting. Hard to find young people to do the work at a $25/hr price point, until you start importing a bunch of very desperate 20-something migrant laborers.
